2010 Grand Teton Lightning Rescue

Description: 

On July 21^st of 2010 three parties of climbers were struck by lightning near the summit of the Grand Teton.  The ensuing rescue was the largest single rescue effort in Grand Teton National Park history.  The incident involved 17 patients and considerable resources.  As Medical Advisors for Grand Teton National Park, Drs. Smith and Wheeler provided on-scene medical oversight and assisted with the rescue operations.  They will share their experience from working a Mass Causality Incident in a technical wilderness setting and the treatment of lightning injuries.

Objectives:

1. Discuss medical oversight of wilderness and rescue medicine

2. Understand the rescue response to a wilderness Mass Causality Incident

3. Review the spectrum of disease caused by lightning
